On 29 November 2011, FEDRE attended in the European Parliament in Brussels the annual Ceremony of Signatures of the Covenant of Mayors. This Covenant is a telling example of environmental commitment at local level in the wider Europe.
By signing the Covenant, Mayors commit themselves to adopt within one year an Action Plan contributing, at the municipal level, to the achievement of the so-called “3 x 20” objectives of the European Union by 2020: reduction of CO2 emissions by 20%, 20% of energy savings, 20% of renewable energies.
The symbolic threshold of 3000 signatories has just been attained with the signing of the Municipality of Gijón in Spain. This represents not less than 142 million of European citizens.
We recall that in 2010, FEDRE actively promoted the extension of the Covenant of Mayors to the Balkans, by issuing a common Declaration together with the Council of Europe, the NALAS network, the association Energy-Cities and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions. Today, around 150 signatories of the Covenant are municipalities from South-East Europe.
